What Is Urology?
Urology is a surgical medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the urinary system in both women and men, as well as diseases of the male reproductive system.
The urinary system (in both women and men) consists of the following organs:
- Kidneys
- Ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder)
- Bladder
- Urethra (urinary canal)
Male reproductive system:
- Prostate
- Testicles
- Penis
The kidneys filter waste products and excess fluids from the body to produce urine. The urine produced is transported to the bladder through the ureters, stored there, and then excreted from the body through the urethra.
Any disease affecting this system may disrupt urination and lead to various health problems. Urology specialists use both surgical and non-surgical methods in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
Diseases Treated in the Urology Department
The urology department covers the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases.
Kidney Stone Disease
Kidney stone disease is one of the most common urological conditions. Minerals and crystals that form in the kidneys may combine over time to create stones. As these stones move through the urinary tract, they may cause severe pain.
Symptoms of kidney stones include:
- Severe flank pain
- Blood in the urine
- Nausea and vomiting
- Pain during urination
Treatment is determined according to the size and location of the stone. Small stones may pass spontaneously, while in some cases stone fragmentation procedures or surgical treatment may be required.
Prostate Diseases
The prostate gland is an important part of the male reproductive system and is located just below the bladder. Prostate diseases are especially common in older men.
The most common prostate diseases include:
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
As age progresses, enlargement of the prostate gland may occur. This condition may put pressure on the urethra and cause urinary problems.
Symptoms include:
- Frequent urination
- Waking up at night to urinate
- Difficulty urinating
- Weak urine stream
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. With early diagnosis, treatment success is very high. Therefore, regular check-ups are recommended, especially for men over the age of 50.
Prostate cancer treatment can be successfully performed with robotic surgery.
Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections are more common in women than in men. Infections usually occur when bacteria settle in the urinary tract.
Symptoms of urinary tract infections include:
- Burning during urination
- Frequent urination
- Increased urge to urinate
- Pain in the lower abdomen
With appropriate antibiotic treatment, the infection can usually be controlled within a short period of time.
Bladder Diseases
The bladder is the organ where urine is stored, and diseases affecting this organ may disrupt urination.
Bladder diseases include:
- Bladder infections
- Bladder stones
- Bladder tumors
- Bladder pain syndrome / interstitial cystitis
Bladder tumors are particularly associated with smoking, and early diagnosis is very important for treatment success.
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine through the urethra that can occur in both women and men and may result from various causes.
Common types include:
- Stress urinary incontinence
- Urge urinary incontinence
- Mixed urinary incontinence
Urethral Stricture
Urethral stricture is a condition that obstructs urine flow due to scar tissue developing in the urethra. It occurs more frequently in men but can also occur in women.
Male Reproductive System Diseases
These include:
- Varicocele
- Male infertility
- Erectile dysfunction
- Testicular diseases
Urological Cancers
The main urological cancers include:
- Kidney cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Penile cancer
Diagnostic Methods Used in Urology
These include:
- Urinalysis
- Blood tests
- Ultrasonography
- Computed tomography (CT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Cystoscopy
- Urodynamic studies
Treatment Methods Used in Urology
Medical Treatments
Stone Fragmentation Methods (ESWL)
Endoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery
Importance of Early Diagnosis
Early diagnosis of urological diseases significantly increases treatment success.
