Algology, also known as pain management, is a medical specialty that investigates the causes of acute and chronic pain, establishes diagnosis, and applies appropriate treatment methods.

What Is Algology?

Algology means "the science of pain." It is a specialized medical field dealing with the diagnosis, identification of causes, and treatment of a wide spectrum of pain ranging from acute (sudden) to chronic (long-lasting) and treatment-resistant pain.

A pain clinic adopts a multidisciplinary approach to identify the source of pain. Algology specialists receive subspecialty training after primary specialization in fields such as anesthesiology, neurology, or physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Our goal is to reduce pain to a tolerable level, restore physical function, and improve quality of life. Pain management focuses not only on temporary relief but also on identifying underlying causes for long-term solutions.

Understanding Pain: Types of Pain

Acute Pain

The body's alarm system. It begins suddenly after injury, surgery, or illness and usually resolves as healing occurs.

Chronic Pain

Pain lasting longer than three months and persisting despite tissue healing. It significantly affects sleep, psychology, and daily life.

Neuropathic Pain

Occurs due to damage or disease of the nervous system and is described as burning, tingling, electric shock, or numbness.

Conditions Treated in Algology

  • Spine-related pain (low back and neck pain, disc herniation)
  • Head and facial pain (migraine, trigeminal neuralgia)
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Musculoskeletal pain (fibromyalgia, joint disorders)
  • Cancer pain
  • Ischemic pain due to vascular diseases
  • Postoperative chronic pain

Diagnostic Methods

  • Detailed medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Imaging (MRI, CT)
  • Nerve evaluation tests

Pain Treatment Methods

Medical Treatments

Pain medications are used according to WHO pain ladder principles. Neuropathic pain may require special medications.

Physical Approaches

TENS, heat/cold therapy, exercise programs.

Psychological Support

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients cope with chronic pain.

Interventional Treatments

  • Nerve blocks
  • Epidural injections

  • Neuromodulation (spinal cord stimulation)
  • Intrathecal pumps
  • Joint injections

Multidisciplinary Approach

Collaboration with:

  • Physical therapy
  • Neurology
